A recent study suggests that there is a potential for using the progestogen provera in women with a uterus who are not undergoing a hysterectomy due to the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. The use of progestogen provera is often prescribed when other options are not considered.
The study involved more than 2,300 women with a uterus who were undergoing an endometrial ablation. One hundred women had a hysterectomy and another hundred had a hysterectomy after hysterectomy following an endometrial ablation. Participants had a uterus removed for an endometrial ablation of either the uterus or the uterine wall.
The researchers found that using progestogen provera was associated with a higher incidence of endometrial hyperplasia compared with other hormonal therapies. The researchers also found that women who used the medication provera had a higher risk of developing endometrial hyperplasia compared to those who did not use the medication provera.
A meta-analysis published in 2015 compared the risk of endometrial hyperplasia in women using provera to that of women taking other hormone therapies. The researchers found that using the medication provera was associated with a lower risk of endometrial hyperplasia, but it also was associated with an increased risk of endometrial hyperplasia and a lower risk of endometrial hyperplasia in the women taking the medication provera.
The researchers also found that women who used the medication provera had a higher incidence of endometrial hyperplasia compared to those taking other hormonal therapies.
